Google is finally bringing its official apps and a new “Spotlight-style” search bar to Windows, making it easier to sync your Android smartphones, tablets and PCs.
The centrepiece of this push is the official Google app for Windows. Now available for download, this app provides a fast and unified way to search both the web and your personal files. Unlike the traditional browser-based search, the desktop app features a “Spotlight-style” floating search bar.
The new Google app isn’t just for looking up facts. It serves as a powerful utility for productivity. One of the standout features is the integration of Google Lens. This allows users to grab any part of their screen and search for what they see. For example, if you are looking at a photo of a landmark or a piece of furniture in a PDF, you can use Lens to identify it immediately.
For those who want more than a search bar, Google has also introduced “Google Essentials.” This is a new all-in-one application designed to be a hub for your most-used services. It brings together shortcuts for Google Photos, Google Messages, and productivity tools like Google Docs, Drive, and Calendar.
A major goal of these updates is to create a seamless experience for people who use Android phones and Windows computers. With Google Essentials, users can quickly respond to text messages from their desktop or pick up where they left off on a document.
Gaming is also a big part of the new strategy. The Essentials hub includes access to Google Play Games, which allows users to play thousands of mobile and PC titles. The best part is that your progress stays synced; you can start a game on your phone during your commute and continue right where you left off on your laptop when you get home.
Google is currently rolling out these features in stages. Google Essentials is debuting first on new HP consumer and gaming laptops, including the Spectre, Envy, and OMEN lines.
