Following the news of his upcoming transition to executive chairman, Apple CEO Tim Cook has published a personal Community Letter from Tim on the company’s U.S. website. The letter serves as a heartfelt reflection on his 15-year tenure, focusing on the human connection between the tech giant and its global user base.

Cook shared that his daily routine has long been anchored by the personal stories sent to his inbox. These messages, ranging from life-saving Apple Watch alerts to technical frustrations, have shaped his perspective on the company’s mission.

The heart of the mission

In the letter, Cook explained how these interactions provided him with a sense of purpose that went beyond corporate metrics. He described the emotional impact of hearing how Apple products become part of people’s most significant life moments. “In every one of those emails I feel the beating heart of our shared humanity,” Cook wrote. “I feel a sense of deepening obligation to work harder and push further.”

He expressed a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to lead, calling the CEO position “the best job in the world” and an honour that “defies description.”

Passing the torch to John Ternus

While much of the letter was reflective, Cook also used the space to formally introduce the community to his successor, John Ternus. Having worked with Ternus for 25 years, Cook highlighted the hardware expert’s obsession with detail and commitment to Apple’s identity. “John cares so much about who we are at Apple, what we do at Apple, who we reach at Apple, and he has the heart and character to lead with extraordinary integrity,” Cook noted.

A personal thank you

The letter concluded with a rare moment of personal vulnerability. Cook reflected on his journey from a rural upbringing to leading one of the world’s most valuable companies, thanking the public for their “confidence and kindness” over the years. “Thank you, most of all, for believing in me to lead the company that has always put you at the centre of our work,” Cook concluded. “Every day we get up and think about what we can do to make your life a little bit better. And every day, you’ve made mine the best I could have asked for.”

The leadership transition is set to take place this September, with Cook remaining closely involved in his new role as executive chairman.

Letter titled 'Community Letter from Tim' to the Apple community, thanking readers and announcing a leadership transition.
