Meta Tracking Employee Keystrokes to Train AI

According to a Reuters reports, Meta has begun installing tracking software on the computers of its U.S.-based staff to capture every mouse movement, click, and keystroke as employees go about their daily work routines.

The initiative is being led by the company’s “Meta Superintelligence Labs” team. In internal memos, the company explained that the goal is to build AI agents that can navigate computer interfaces as naturally as humans do. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone clarified that the data collection is strictly for model training.

The new software does not monitor every single thing an employee does. Instead, it focuses on a specific list of work-related applications and websites. Along with tracking physical inputs like mouse clicks, the tool also takes occasional snapshots of the employee’s screen to provide the AI with context. This helps the model understand not just that a button was clicked, but why it was clicked in relation to what was happening on the screen.

Meta has stated that it has put safeguards in place to protect sensitive content and ensure that the information gathered is not used for performance reviews or disciplinary actions. The company is framing the program as a collaborative effort, telling employees they can help improve AI simply by performing their regular duties.

This move comes at a time when Meta is significantly increasing its spending on AI infrastructure. The company’s capital expenditure is projected to reach between $115 billion and $135 billion in 2026.
