Google Testing “Ask YouTube” AI Search

Google is currently testing “Ask YouTube,” a new conversational AI tool that summarizes videos and answers complex questions to help you find content without the scrolling, The Verge is reporting.

Instead of just returning a list of titles, the tool creates a custom response page that provides direct answers. For example, if you ask how to fix a kitchen sink, the AI can provide a text summary of the necessary steps alongside specific video recommendations.

The real shift with Ask YouTube is its ability to handle a dialogue. Unlike the standard search function, this interface allows for follow-up questions. If you are researching a historical event and want more details on a specific person mentioned in the summary, you can simply ask. The AI then scans the platform’s massive library to refine its answers and provide more context.

It is important to distinguish this from the existing Ask button that some users see under individual videos. While that tool is designed to help you understand a single video, the new Ask YouTube tool acts as a layer over the entire platform.

As with many of Google’s most ambitious projects, this is starting as an experiment. The feature is currently available to YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States who are 18 or older. Eligible users have to manually turn the feature on through the YouTube Labs page.

The current test phase is scheduled to run until June 8. This limited rollout allows Google to gather feedback and see how the AI handles the vast diversity of content on the site. Google is encouraging users to leave feedback on the AI’s responses to help improve accuracy.
