Valve has announced that its new Steam controller launches next week on May 4th. In Canada, the Steam Controller is being made available for $149.

Following the announcement of the Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame last November, Valve is finally set to release its fully redesigned peripheral. The Steam Controller features a set of magnetic thumbsticks, similar to the widely beloved Hall-effect stick technology. Valve has also included four haptic motors in the controller. The company also promises around 35 hours of use from its 8.39Wh battery.

The Steam Controller is compatible with a variety of devices, including PC, Windows laptops, the Steam Deck, and mobile devices via Steam Link. Of course, the controller will also be compatible with the Steam Machine and Steam Frame when they launch.

Unfortunately, Valve’s release schedule for the Steam Machine compact PC and the Steam Frame VR headset has yet to be determined. Originally, all three devices were slated to launch in early 2026. Following the announcement, Valve began to feel the pressure of the global RAM shortage. Earlier this year, the company wrote that its devices are being impacted by “memory and storage shortages you’ve likely heard about.”

Compared to other contemporary controllers, the Steam Controller has a premium price tag attached. The Xbox Wireless Controller is available in Canada for $84.99, while the PlayStation 5’s DualSense is $94.99. Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 controllers are $124.99 while its Pro Controller is $109.99.

Currently, Valve is not offering preorders for the Steam Controller on its website. The page states that the device is “coming soon.” Speaking with PC Gamer, Valve engineer Steve Cardinali has indicated that the company has “built up a good supply” for inventory. The Steam Controller is launching globally, so there’s likely to be demand for the product on May 4th.
