GameStop Makes $55 Billion Offer to Acquire eBay

Popular video game brand GameStop has made a $55.5 billion USD (around $74.8 billion CAD) offer to acquire eBay. The cash-and-stock offer arrives as the company invests deeply in the hobbyist and collector sphere.

As first reported by WSJ, GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen is said to be planning an aggressive purchase to fold eBay under the GameStop umbrella. The deal is valued at $125 per share, $20 more than at the end of New York trading on Friday, according to a statement on Sunday.

Cohen also sent a letter to eBay, in which he expressed his plans to achieve $2bn in cost savings at the company within a year of the deal’s closure. It’s said that eBay is now “carefully” considering GameStop’s offer. Though if eBay’s board rejects the offer, Cohen is prepared to go directly to shareholders.

GameStop has been in the midst of quite a tumultuous journey for the past few years. As physical game sales aren’t as lucrative as they used to be, the company has had to pivot quite a bit. In 2023, the company pulled out of its short-lived crypto business and shut down its NFT inspirations.

GameStop has been steadily expanding into the business of apparel, hobbyism, and collectible items. Many brick-and-mortar locations are filled with graphic t-shirts, Funko POPs, Pokémon cards, and more. With regard to the latter, there’s quite a bit of synergy between selling Pokémon, Magic, and One Piece cards and eBay’s acquisition.

As of early 2025, GameStop operates around 2,325 locations in the U.S. In May 2025, GameStop Canada was acquired by Stephan Tetrault, who revived the Electronics Boutique Canada branding. EB Games maintains the overall retail experience of GameStop.
