Apple, MAMI Showcase Films Shot on iPhone

Apple and the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) have showcased a handful of incredible films shot by creators and filmmakers using the iPhone 17 Pro, that push the boundaries of modern cinema.

Under the banner of MAMI Select, a group of visionary filmmakers has released a series of short films designed to demonstrate that the quality of a story is no longer limited by the size of the camera. The films featured in the showcase cover a wide range of genres, from intimate dramas to visually striking thrillers.

The success of the MAMI Select series is largely attributed to the technical capabilities of the iPhone 17 Pro. Filmmakers involved in the project specifically pointed to the Log encoding feature, which allows for greater control over colour grading in post-production. This is the same workflow used in high-end Hollywood productions, enabling directors to achieve a specific look and mood.

Another key factor was the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES) support. By integrating these professional standards, Apple has made it possible for an iPhone to sit alongside traditional cinema cameras on a professional set.

Beyond the technical specs, the filmmakers noted that using an iPhone changed the energy on set. Traditional cameras are bulky and can often be intimidating for non-professional actors or people being filmed in real-world locations. The small form factor of the iPhone allowed directors to move more freely, capturing candid moments and tight angles that would be physically impossible for a standard rig.

The partnership between Apple and MAMI isn’t just about showing what famous directors can do; it is about inspiring the next generation. By highlighting these films, Apple is sending a clear message to aspiring creators i.e. the tool you have in your pocket is powerful enough to tell a world-class story.
