Google Drops Gemini Spark: A 24/7 AI Agent That Does Real Work for You
Google just announced Gemini Spark at I/O today, and it is a pretty big deal. Rather than just answering questions, Spark is a 24/7 AI agent that actually does things for you in the background while you get on with your life.
It runs on Google’s new Gemini 3.5 model and keeps working even after you close your laptop or put your phone down. It lives inside your everyday Google apps like Gmail, Docs, and Slides, and you can set it up to handle recurring tasks automatically.
Some examples of what it can do: scan your monthly credit card statements for sneaky new subscription charges, check your inbox for updates from your kids’ school and send you and your partner a daily summary, or take raw meeting notes scattered across emails and chats and turn them into a clean Google Doc with a ready-to-send project kickoff email.
The example shown was asking Spark to prepare for your kid’s t-ball game, in which it then added items you wanted into your Instacart cart, doing the heavy lifting for you.
Google is also adding MCP connections today for Canva, OpenTable, and Instacart, so Spark can start getting things done through those apps too. Over the coming weeks you will be able to text or email Spark directly, build custom sub-agents, and let it control your local browser. If that sounds a little scary, Google says Spark is designed to ask for permission before doing anything high-stakes like spending money or firing off emails. You also control which apps it connects to.
Spark (not to be confused with Readdle’s email app!) is going out to trusted testers this week, with a beta for U.S. Google AI Ultra subscribers launching next week. The partner list is already massive, including Adobe, Asana, Spotify, Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Zillow, Expedia, HubSpot, Dropbox, Canva, Instacart, and dozens more.
Can you try Gemini Spark in Canada? Not quite yet, as Google says it is rolling out to trusted testers first this week, and the Beta is coming to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. next week.
We’re getting closer and closer to a Google-like OpenClaw but without the complexities of managing it all by yourself.
