Lifetime Plex Pass Price Jumps to Over $1,000 in Canada

Popular media streaming platform Plex is tripling the cost of its Lifetime Plex Pass to US $749.99 starting July 1, giving users a final six-week window to lock in the current $250 rate. That works out to about $1,030 CAD, which is insane.

The nearly unprecedented 200 percent price hike gives budget-conscious cord-cutters a final six-week window to purchase or upgrade to the lifetime tier at the current historical rate. Plex confirmed that the price shift will officially take effect at exactly 12:01 AM UTC on July 1.

The company was quick to reassure its existing customer base that this adjustment will not alter their current access. All current Lifetime Plex Pass holders will continue to have full access to all premium benefits, features, and perks without any additional fees.

Furthermore, Plex is leaving its recurring subscription models untouched for the time being. Users who prefer to pay as they go will see no changes to the monthly plan, which remains at $6.99, or the annual plan, which sits at $69.99. The separate Remote Watch Pass pricing will also remain entirely unchanged.

For over a decade, Plex has been a favourite tool for technology enthusiasts who want to self-host their own movies, television shows, music, and home photos, effectively building a private, personalized version of Netflix. While the core server software remains completely free, the premium Plex Pass unlocks essential features like mobile offline downloads, hardware-accelerated transcoding, skip intro and credit options, and advanced audio capabilities via Plexamp.

In an official statement regarding the decision, Plex admitted that it has actively considered entirely eliminating the Lifetime Plex Pass in the past. The company explained that recurring monthly and annual subscriptions provide the stable, predictable revenue stream required to sustain long-term software development and operational engineering.

Rather than retiring the popular lifetime plan completely, management ultimately chose to keep it available as a premium option, albeit at a drastically higher financial threshold.

glad i got lifetime at $80 but if they ever decide to switch to a new platform like plex 2, i would go to jellyfin or whatever comes next. they degraded the plex mobile app and now is slowly adding the features back like its new. -.-

Look. Jellyfin is free. If you want to use a product that looks and has the features of an unpaid/community product? Go ahead.

But jellyfin doesn’t give me all the features I need. I run a large server with multiple users/devices. I can’t do that effectively with jellyfin.

For me? Plex does exactly what I need it to with minimal configuration or monitoring.

and for those complaining that Plex is “adding features back”? Yeah they are and guess what they shouldn’t be. Plexamp should be a separate app….

I have a 15,000 track library. I don’t want that in there with my movies and TV shows
