Google Search Gets Its Biggest AI Upgrade in 25 Years

Google has completely overhauled its flagship search engine, marking what the company calls the most significant shift to the iconic search box since it debuted more than a quarter of a century ago.

Speaking at the annual Google I/O 2026 developer conference, Liz Reid, Vice President of Search, detailed a massive wave of artificial intelligence features designed to transform the platform from a traditional directory of web links into a proactive, conversational assistant.

Google revealed that its AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users within just a year of launching, while the broader AI Overviews feature now reaches 2.5 billion users globally. To support this massive scaling and handle increasingly complex tasks, Google is making its newest frontier model, Gemini 3.5 Flash, the global default engine powering Search.

The most visible change for everyday users is the completely redesigned search box. Instead of a static bar that expects a few rigid keywords, the new intelligent search box dynamically expands as you type. This gives users plenty of physical screen space to describe intricate, long, and multi-step questions in natural language.

Furthermore, the updated system goes well territory covered by standard autocomplete software. The AI anticipates user intent to offer advanced, context-aware suggestions while you type. Crucially, this new interface handles multiple data types seamlessly.

Users can drop text, images, files, videos, and even active Chrome tabs directly into the search box as part of a single query. Once Google generates an initial response via an AI Overview, users can ask follow-up questions to enter a continuous, conversational back-and-forth session without losing the context of their previous thoughts.

Perhaps the most radical shift announced at the keynote is the introduction of “Search agents.” This feature enables users to build and deploy personalized AI bots that run continuously in the background on Google Cloud virtual machines. Instead of requiring users to manually refresh Google to check for new information, these information agents work 24/7.

Google also offered a preview of its new generative layout capabilities, which are powered by internal technology called Google Antigravity. Rather than displaying standard website listings, Search can now code and assemble interactive mini-apps, custom tables, and visual simulations on the fly.
