OLED iPad Pro to Offer Unmatched Display Performance

According to a report by The Elec, the upcoming iPad Pro is set to feature a massive display upgrade as Apple shifts to “tandem” OLED technology for better brightness and a thinner overall design.

The report notes that Apple is shifting its manufacturing strategy to include more diverse suppliers for its OLED panels. This move is designed to ensure a steady supply chain and potentially lower production costs for the next generation of high-end tablets.

The shift specifically involves the transition to tandem OLED technology. Unlike the standard OLED screens found in most smartphones, tandem OLED uses two layers of red, green, and blue pixels stacked on top of each other. This dual-layer approach significantly improves the brightness of the screen while also doubling the lifespan of the panel.

By bringing in multiple display manufacturers, Apple is protecting itself against potential production bottlenecks. In the past, the company has relied heavily on a single primary supplier for its most advanced screens. However, as the complexity of these tandem OLED panels increases, having a secondary or even tertiary source becomes a necessity.

The report suggests that while LG Display and Samsung Display remain the frontrunners, Apple is looking to balance the order volumes between them. This internal competition often leads to better pricing for Apple, which could help offset the high costs associated with such advanced display technology. It also allows the company to pivot quickly if one manufacturer faces technical hurdles or yield issues during the assembly process.

For the average user, the jump to tandem OLED will be immediately noticeable. These screens are capable of reaching much higher peak brightness levels, making them easier to use in direct sunlight. Professional creators, such as photographers and video editors, will also benefit the most from this change as the technology offers better colour accuracy and deeper blacks.

Additionally, the efficiency of the stacked layers means the display consumes less power at equivalent brightness levels compared to older screens, which should lead to better battery life across the iPad Pro lineup.
