Dyson PencilVac Fluffycones Review: The Most Fun I’ve Had Vacuuming

For years, Dyson has built its reputation on reimagining household appliances. Whether it’s cordless vacuums, air purifiers, or hair styling tools, the company has consistently focused on engineering products that challenge conventional designs. The $749 Dyson PencilVac Fluffycones continues that tradition, arriving as what Dyson calls the world’s slimmest vacuum cleaner.
After spending several weeks with the PencilVac Fluffycones, one thing becomes immediately clear: this isn’t designed to replace your primary vacuum. Instead, Dyson has created a lightweight, highly maneuverable cleaning tool built specifically for everyday maintenance on hard floors. Think of it less as a traditional cordless vacuum and more as a futuristic broom that supports many of Dyson’s core innovations. For households constantly battling dust, pet hair, crumbs, and daily messes, the PencilVac Fluffycones offers a compelling alternative to dragging out a larger vacuum for a quick clean intermittently throughout the week.
Out of the Box
The first thing you’ll notice about the PencilVac Fluffycones is its size, or lack thereof. At just 38mm in diameter and weighing only 1.8kg, the PencilVac is remarkably slim and easy to use. Unlike traditional cordless vacuums that place the motor and dustbin near the handle, Dyson has integrated everything directly into the wand itself. The motor, battery, controls, and dust collection system are all housed within the PencilVac’s pencil-like frame.

Power comes from Dyson’s latest Hyperdymium motor, spinning at up to 140,000 RPM. Dyson claims up to 30 minutes of runtime on a single charge, which proved sufficient for multiple quick cleaning sessions throughout the day. The included accessories are intentionally minimal. Alongside the Fluffycones cleaning head, Dyson includes a rotating combination crevice and dusting tool designed for baseboards, corners, furniture, and elevated surfaces.
Perhaps the most unique accessory is the freestanding magnetic charging dock. Rather than mounting the vacuum to a wall, the PencilVac stands upright on its own, ready to grab whenever a mess appears. The dock certainly looks sleek, but it does require dedicated floor space. While not particularly large, it feels somewhat at odds with the PencilVac’s ultra-compact philosophy. I’ve opted to keep mine in the corner of my living room, where it sits nicely in my condo and is within arm’s reach.
A Cleaning Head Unlike Anything Else
The PencilVac’s headline feature is undoubtedly its Fluffycones cleaning head. Rather than using a traditional brush roller, Dyson employs four conical microfiber rollers arranged around a central suction channel. The front and rear rollers rotate in opposite directions, pulling dust, debris, and hair toward the center of the vacuum. The cleaning head is undeniably soft, so you don’t have to worry about scuffs or accidental damage on hardwood floors.

The result is one of the most maneuverable cleaning experiences I’ve encountered. The PencilVac glides effortlessly around furniture legs, under tables, and through tight spaces. It can move forward, backward, or even sideways without feeling awkward. The glide is one of the most satisfying I’ve experienced from a vacuum. It skates on hardwood floors and tiles to such a degree that, when I turned it on as it lay on my floor, the vacuum began to move on its own.
Dyson also incorporates green illumination lights on both sides of the cleaning head. Similar to the technology found in the company’s Detect series vacuums, these lights reveal dust and debris that would otherwise remain invisible on hard floors. There’s something insanely satisfying about seeing all those micro-crumbs, hairs, and debris being pulled up in real time and the progress made thanks to the green light. While the feature may initially feel like a gimmick, it quickly becomes one of the PencilVac’s most useful tools. More than once, I found myself vacuuming areas that looked clean until the green illumination revealed otherwise.
As enjoyable as the PencilVac is to use, its limitations become apparent when tackling larger cleaning jobs. This is not a vacuum designed for deep cleaning carpets. While it can handle some low-pile rugs, its performance is best on hardwood, laminate, tile, and vinyl flooring. Homes with significant carpet coverage will still require a more powerful vacuum for routine cleaning.
The PencilVac also struggles with larger debris. During testing, cereal pieces, pet food, cat litter, and larger particles occasionally caused blockages within the narrow suction pathway. Fine dust and everyday dirt are no problem, but bigger messes often require multiple passes or a switch to the crevice attachment. The Fluffycones head also can’t fully reach into sharp room corners due to its rounded shape. While edge cleaning is excellent, corners sometimes require additional attention with the included attachment. These aren’t dealbreakers, but they underscore that the PencilVac is a specialist rather than an all-purpose cleaning solution.
Designed for Everyday Cleaning
Where the PencilVac truly shines is in daily maintenance. Dust, crumbs, pet hair, and fine debris are handled exceptionally well. Throughout testing, I found myself reaching for the PencilVac far more frequently than my larger cordless vacuum simply because of how convenient it was. Its lightweight design makes it easy to carry upstairs, maneuver around furniture, and use in awkward spaces such as staircases or beneath dining tables. The flexible joint and omnidirectional movement help it navigate obstacles with minimal effort.

Hair pickup is another standout feature. Long hair, pet fur, and general household fluff are effectively directed toward the suction channel without becoming tangled around the rollers. During testing, I never once needed to stop and manually remove wrapped hair from the cleaning head. The PencilVac also features Dyson’s latest hygienic dust compression system. As debris enters the collection chamber, it is compacted into dense bundles, maximizing the capacity of the surprisingly small dustbin. Emptying is equally impressive. A sliding eject mechanism pushes debris directly into the garbage, minimizing the dust clouds that often accompany traditional vacuum emptying systems.
The PencilVac offers up to 30 minutes of runtime, which may seem modest compared to larger cordless vacuums. In practice, however, most cleaning sessions lasted between five and ten minutes, leaving plenty of charge remaining. Because the vacuum is designed for quick daily maintenance rather than full-house cleaning, battery life never felt restrictive. The only usability concern remains the charging dock. While aesthetically pleasing and easy to use, its floor-standing design requires a permanent location. Some users may prefer the flexibility of a wall-mounted charging system, particularly in smaller homes or apartments.
Final Thoughts
The Dyson PencilVac Fluffycones feels exactly like the product Dyson intended. It’s innovative, beautifully engineered, and genuinely enjoyable to use. The slim design, excellent maneuverability, green illumination technology, and tangle-free Fluffycones cleaning head make it one of the most convenient cleaning tools currently available.
At the same time, it isn’t powerful enough to replace a traditional cordless vacuum. Its limitations with carpets, larger debris, and deep-cleaning tasks prevent it from becoming an all-in-one solution. For homeowners with mostly hard flooring who want an effortless way to stay ahead of daily messes, the PencilVac Fluffycones is a fantastic companion cleaner. It won’t eliminate the need for a larger vacuum, but it’s become the one I reach for most often. Like many Dyson products, the PencilVac Fluffycones succeeds not by doing everything, but by doing one specific job exceptionally well.
