Apple’s iPad Mini Is Finally Getting An OLED Screen This Fall, Says Report

Apple is getting ready to give its iPad mini a big upgrade, and it could land sooner than expected.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the next iPad mini will feature an OLED screen for the first time. The updated tablet is code named J510, and people with knowledge of Apple’s plans say it could launch as early as this fall, with a release planned by October.

OLED displays are better than LCD displays as they bring superior contrast and vibrant colours. This is because each pixel emits its own light, allowing for true blacks and improved energy efficiency (meaning you get better battery life). The tech has been on the iPhone since 2017 and iPad Pro since 2024. The only holdouts after this would be the entry iPad and iPad Air which still use LCD, but Gurman says the iPad Air will eventually shift to OLED too.

Gurman reports Apple is also working on refreshed versions of its entry level iPad and iPad Air for next year. The new entry level iPad, code named J581, is said to be scheduled for release as early as the first calendar quarter of 2027. The new iPad Air, set to retain its 11 and 13-inch sizes are said to be codenamed J807 and J837.

This September, Apple is expected to release its first-ever foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, while rumours point to an Apple Watch refresh too, plus various new Macs this year.
