X Rebuilt Its Android App From Scratch. Features Land There Before iOS Now.

X has finished a full rewrite of its Android app, a project that took more than a year and ranks as one of the biggest engineering efforts in the company’s history.

Nikita Bier, Head of Product at X, announced the launch on Monday, saying, “Today we’re announcing the completion of one of the largest engineering projects in the company’s history: We rebuilt the X Android app from scratch.”

The pitch is speed, both in how the app runs and in how quickly X can ship updates to it. “It’s faster, smoother and more reliable. But most of all: it will enable us to build new features at lightning speed,” Bier said.

He was upfront that the rollout isn’t perfectly clean. “There are still some rough edges. We’re hustling quickly to get features out like hosting Spaces and improve performance on older devices,” he wrote, asking users to report any bugs they run into.

Android users have long complained the app lags behind the iOS version on features, and Bier suggested that gap is about to close. “React with Video, Video Editor, and Spaces are coming very soon. Cashtags, Custom Timelines, and many new features are already live,” he said, adding that “going forward, many things will hit Android first. The future is looking bright for X Android users.”

Bier also credited the engineering team behind the rebuild, calling it a massive undertaking and thanking the engineers who “worked day & night to make it happen.”
