Amazon’s Ring has refreshed its apartment and condo-focused smart doorbell in Canada, which is aimed squarely at renters who can’t drill holes into their doors. The new Ring Peephole Cam 2K swaps in for a standard optical door viewer, turning an ordinary peephole into a connected security camera for $139.99 CAD, with pre-orders starting today.
The biggest change is picture quality as Ring bumped the sensor up to a 2K feed with up to 6x digital zoom, which makes it a lot easier to read a package label or spot someone standing further down the hallway. A wide 140-degree field of view, both horizontal and vertical, lets you see people from head to toe.
Setup stays simple as all you need to do is unscrew your door’s existing peephole with the included tool, slot in the exterior camera, and secure the interior module on the inside of the door. It fits doors between 32.5 mm and 60 mm thick with peephole openings of 12 mm to 14 mm. Since you lose the ability to look through the glass once it’s installed, you can pair the camera with a smart display like the Echo Show to check the live feed from inside (which is not included of course).
Power comes from Ring’s quick-release rechargeable battery pack, so there’s no wiring to deal with. The usual smart features are all here too, including two-way audio, real-time motion alerts, and customizable privacy zones, so you can talk to a delivery driver right from your phone.
