Spotify’s One-Tap Ad Skip Button Faces Backlash from Creators
Spotify is testing a subtle new interface update that has sent shockwaves through the podcasting industry. The company has recently began rolling out a smart skip button, giving select users the ability to jump past unwanted segments with a single tap (via Semafor).

While skipping audio isn’t new, this upgraded button specifically targets filler content, promos, and most importantly, host-read ad breaks, provided those ads were not sold directly through Spotify’s own advertising network.
The change has triggered immediate backlash from prominent creators and media networks who rely on direct-sold sponsorships to pay their production bills.
Tommy Vietor, co-founder of political podcast network Crooked Media, publicly vented his frustration online, calling out Spotify for attempting to disrupt the financial foundation of independent shows. Industry observers have warned that if the feature becomes permanent and widely available, it could severely devalue host-read ads.
Under the traditional system, users can manual skip through commercial breaks using standard 15-second or 30-second fast-forward controls. However, doing so requires repeated tapping and constant attention to figure out when the actual show resumes. Spotify’s experimental button simplifies this process entirely by jumping straight to the end of the promotional segment, allowing listeners to skip entire ad reads effortlessly.
In response to growing concern from top audio networks, Spotify has tried to reassure creators that the tool is intended to improve listener retention. The company claims internal data suggests that reducing user friction during wordy ad breaks keeps listeners engaged for longer overall durations. Spotify also clarified that the test is currently limited to select Premium subscribers while the mobile app is actively open on screen, rather than running in the background or on lock screens.
Despite these assurances, media executives see the move as a strategic push by Spotify to force publishers into its own ecosystem. When advertisers buy campaigns directly through Spotify’s internal marketplace, those ads cannot be skipped using the new feature.
By contrast, sponsorships arranged directly between podcasters and brands are subject to the one-tap skip, putting independent networks at a distinct financial disadvantage.
