Fizz is officially bringing Wi-Fi Calling to its mobile members, allowing users to place calls and send text messages over a Wi-Fi connection when cellular reception is weak or unavailable.
We previously told you that Fizz had launched support pages for the new feature. Now we have the first communication on the matter according to the company.
A Fizz spokesperson confirmed the launch in a Tuesday email to iPhone in Canada, stating that official support is actively expanding across its network.
The national carrier announced the news to its community forum in a post titled “Wi-Fi Calling is coming to Fizz”, detailing how the technology works and what customers should expect during the initial release.
“Good news, Fizz members: Wi-Fi Calling is gradually making its way to Fizz,” wrote a community administrator on the company’s official forum. “Wi-Fi Calling (VoWiFi, or Voice over Wi-Fi) is a technology that lets you make and receive calls (and, under certain conditions, send text messages) over a Wi-Fi network, even when cellular coverage is weak or unavailable. In short, it’s the solution for those calls that keep dropping when you’re in the basement.”
Rather than an immediate release for all subscribers, the feature is being introduced through a phased schedule that depends on software support from individual phone makers.
“Wi-Fi Calling availability depends on software support from device manufacturers (Apple, Samsung, Google, and others),” the post explained. “Some devices may not be compatible with this technology. That’s why this new feature will be rolled out gradually over the coming months, device by device, based on software updates made available by manufacturers.”
Because the timeline relies on external manufacturer updates, Fizz cautioned members that support teams cannot provide individual release dates or confirm whether a specific phone model will receive the feature.
“As a result, some of you will see the feature become available before others, and that’s perfectly normal,” the forum update noted. “Unfortunately, we’re unable to provide a specific rollout date or a definitive list of compatible devices, as factors outside of our control may affect the timeline. Since this is a phased launch involving several variables beyond our control, we ask that you refrain from contacting customer service to inquire about a specific device model or rollout date; this information is simply not available at this time.”
Subscribers will see the option to enable Wi-Fi Calling within their phone’s settings menu as manufacturer updates become available for their devices.
