Apple is giving millions of iPhone owners another year of satellite connectivity without charging a penny. Deep in the footnotes of today’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement, the tech giant confirmed an extension of its free satellite service for existing iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16 users, yet again.
The bonus coverage applies to any eligible device activated in a supported country before midnight Pacific Time on September 9, 2026.
When cellular networks and Wi-Fi signals disappear, the feature lets people message loved ones, contact roadside assistance, update their location in Find My, or reach emergency services directly overhead.
Apple originally introduced Emergency SOS via satellite alongside the iPhone 14 line in 2022, offering two years of free access. Since then, the company has repeatedly pushed back the start date for paid subscriptions. Today’s move marks the third extension for iPhone 14 owners, while extending the safety net for iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 users as well.
At this point, Apple should maybe keep this as a permanent feature for iPhone 14 owners and newer. If someone was to actually die in the backcountry because they missed the feature cut off or didn’t renew their subscription in time? That would make for some disastrous headlines.
