Apple is reportedly planning a major comeback in the enterprise server market, eyeing Nvidia’s hardware technology to help power its next generation of artificial intelligence infrastructure, The Information is reproting (via Reuters).
The iPhone maker is believed to be developing enterprise-grade AI servers powered by two to four of its future M8 Ultra chips. However, instead of relying purely on home-grown hardware, Apple is in discussions with Nvidia to incorporate key networking technologies, such as Nvidia’s NVLink interconnects, to bridge its custom silicon.
The move marks a notable strategic shift for Apple, which has historically preferred maintaining total control over its supply chain and hardware ecosystem. By considering Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion technology to connect its future M8 Ultra server chips, Apple could gain the scaling advantages of Nvidia’s data center ecosystem without sacrificing the energy efficiency of its custom Apple Silicon architecture.
The reported server plans align with Apple’s broader cloud strategy. Earlier this year, reports indicated that Apple expanded its Private Cloud Compute pipeline to run on third-party cloud platforms using Nvidia GPUs for heavy AI model workloads.
Building dedicated enterprise AI servers powered by multi-chip M8 Ultra clusters would allow Apple to bring more of those workloads back in-house over time, giving the company tighter control over user data privacy, processing latency, and long-term operational costs.
Combining proprietary M-series chips with industry-standard data center interconnects could allow Apple to build out massive AI server racks far faster than developing a proprietary high-speed networking solution from scratch.
Sources cited in the report suggest that Apple’s custom M8 Ultra AI servers are targeted for a launch further down the road, potentially around 2029.
