Meta Launches Muse on macOS to Take on Apple Intelligence

Mark Zuckerberg took to X yesterday to roll out access to Meta’s newest AI application, Muse for Mac, marking a major push to turn the desktop into an agent-driven workspace.

Zuckerberg noted that safety alignment is becoming a vital competitive feature rather than a reason to halt progress. To back up his point, Meta released Muse directly to desktop users, positioning the personal AI agent as a tool capable of taking real action across local system applications rather than simply sitting inside a browser window as a text chatbot.

Unlike standard web interfaces, Muse for Mac is designed as a deep system integration. The application can work with files, notes, calendars, and emails directly on a user’s Mac, allowing the agent to perform multi-step tasks across local programs with explicit user permission.

Based on early reviews, Muse is seen as a rival to SpaceXAI’s Grok Bot, which is rolling out a voice mode to let you just chat with your agents instead of typing.

Users can hand off tasks such as sorting folders, synthesizing summaries from saved notes and chats, or completing partially filled forms using local documents. Meta noted that the agent continues working in the background even when the desktop window is closed, letting users delegate time-consuming work and check back later across connected devices.

Addressing privacy and control, Meta built the desktop app around opt-in permissions. Users retain granular control over what Muse can access, with optional Full Disk Access toggles and mandatory approval prompts before the AI carries out sensitive tasks like deleting files or sending outgoing messages.

While the launch of Muse on Mac expands Meta’s hardware reach, Canadian users face an immediate hurdle i.e. the official waitlist portal is currently locked to US addresses. Canadians can easily bypass the regional restriction by using a VPN. What happens after that will be interesting to see.
