Gemini Can Now Make Phone Calls for You, Canada Has to Wait
Google is giving Gemini the ability to make phone calls on your behalf, allowing its AI assistant to contact businesses and handle everyday tasks without requiring you to sit through the call yourself.
According to a new Google support document, Gemini can call businesses to check hours, ask about product availability, get service quotes, book or manage appointments and reservations, navigate automated phone menus and even wait on hold.
The feature is rolling out gradually and comes with several restrictions for now. Users must be at least 18, live in the U.S. and have a Pixel 11 with a U.S. SIM card. A Google AI subscription is also required, along with the Public Beta version of the Phone by Google app, the latest Gemini app and a device set to English.
Users can start by asking Gemini to make a call or by including “@Call for me” in their request. Google suggests giving Gemini details such as dates, times, preferences and alternative options so it knows exactly what it should accomplish.
For example, someone could ask Gemini to call a restaurant and book a table for two at 7 p.m., or contact a dry cleaner to find out how much it charges to hem a pair of pants.
Before placing the call, Gemini shows a summary of the task, the phone number it plans to contact and the information it will share. The user then has to tap “Call for me” before the call begins.
Gemini places the call using the phone’s mobile network and phone number, meaning normal carrier charges still apply. At the beginning of each conversation, Google says Gemini will identify itself as an AI assistant calling on the user’s behalf, state the user’s name and disclose that the call is being recorded.
Users aren’t completely removed from the conversation either. They can watch a live transcript in the Gemini app, listen to the call as it happens or tap “Take over” to join the conversation themselves. Gemini will then announce that the user is taking over before leaving the call.
Once the call ends, Gemini sends a notification with a summary of what happened. Users can also access the full transcript and recording through their call history in the Phone app.
There are some obvious limits. Gemini can’t call emergency services, complete financial transactions, share sensitive information such as passwords, credit card details or health information, or make telemarketing calls. Google also imposes a daily limit on how many calls users can place through the feature.
For now, Gemini can only call U.S. phone numbers, and Google hasn’t announced when the feature will expand to Canada. Right now, a similar feature is available for Meta’s Muse, which can call U.S. businesses for you (and it works in Canada).
The feature pushes Gemini further into agent-style AI, where the assistant doesn’t just answer questions but carries out real-world tasks on a user’s behalf. In this case, that means taking over one of the more tedious jobs people still regularly have to do themselves: picking up the phone and calling a business. Soon, it will just be a future of AI agents talking to AI agents.
