Apple Watch Hypertension Feature Gets Updated Health Canada Approval

Health Canada has updated its approval for Apple’s hypertension notification feature, adding new identifiers for the iPhone and Apple Watch apps under an existing medical device licence.

The feature is listed under Health Canada licence No. 114026 as a Class II medical device. The original licence was first issued on September 25, 2025. Health Canada’s database now shows additional device identifiers dated September 28, 2026, for both the Hypertension Notification Feature iOS app and Apple Watch app, according to checks by iPhone in Canada.

That means this is not the first Canadian approval for Apple’s hypertension notifications. Instead, the September 28 entries appear to update the existing licence with newer versions or identifiers for the software.

Apple’s hypertension notification feature runs in the background on supported Apple Watch models and looks for patterns that may suggest chronic high blood pressure.

The feature does not measure blood pressure directly like a traditional cuff. Instead, Apple Watch analyzes data collected by its optical heart sensor over time and can notify users when it detects patterns associated with possible hypertension.

Apple first received Health Canada approval for the feature in September 2025, before launching hypertension notifications in Canada one month later.

The new September 28, 2026 entries are notable because Apple has since introduced newer Apple Watch hardware, including Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4.

Apple says the feature is intended to help users identify possible signs of hypertension that may otherwise go unnoticed. A notification is not a diagnosis, and users are advised to follow up with a healthcare professional.
