Google Drive and Docs Now Support Markdown Files Natively

Google Drive

Google is giving Markdown files first-class treatment across its productivity apps. Starting now, Google Drive and Google Docs can handle .md files natively, which means you can preview them in Drive and open, edit, comment on, and collaborate on them in Docs without converting the file into a Google Doc.

The rollout covers all Google Workspace customers as well as personal Google accounts, so Canadian users are included. The announcement came today, October 5, 2026, said Chandu Thota, the Google vice president leading engineering for Google Workspace. Thota also pointed readers to a post on the Google Workspace Updates blog with more details.

Thota explained why the company went there. Markdown, he wrote, “has become the common language between humans and AI agents,” pointing to specs, plans, readmes, tables, task lists, and generated documents as examples of material that increasingly starts life as a Markdown file. Rather than forcing that content through a conversion step, Drive and Docs now treat the .md file as a native citizen.

He added that he is excited about the update because it “removes a lot of small but painful friction”: no more import and export loops, fewer broken formats, and comments and collaboration available where teams already work. Anyone who has watched a carefully built table fall apart after a round trip through file conversion will feel that relief.

Google has been inching toward this for a while. When Google Docs on the web gained more Markdown support, users could already type Markdown shortcuts to format documents, but the underlying file still lived as a Google Doc. Native .md handling goes further, and it arrives as Google keeps weaving conversational AI features into apps like YouTube and Docs. For teams comparing options, Proton has also launched an encrypted alternative to Google Docs aimed at users who want stronger privacy.

The rollout is starting now, but as with most Google launches, availability can arrive in waves, so the new options may not show up in your account right away. Keep an eye on Drive and Docs over the coming days and check for the update the next time you open a Markdown file.

The rollout is underway now, so whether you have it yet depends on when the wave reaches your account. The real test will be whether Sheets and Slides get the same treatment, and whether editing holds up on a messy table or two.
