1Password Now Lets AI Agents Sign In Without Seeing Your Passwords

Toronto-based 1Password has launched 1Password for Agents, a new platform that lets personal AI agents sign in to your accounts without ever seeing or storing your passwords.

1Password announced the platform on Thursday, saying it lets agents use “the passwords, secrets, and credentials they need to complete approved tasks without seeing or storing them.” It’s built for the new wave of personal agents that plan trips, manage bills and prepare expense reports for people, instead of just answering questions.

Right now, the easy way to get an agent past a login is to hand it your password. 1Password says that shortcut can leave your credentials “in places they can no longer control,” since a copy often gets saved for next time.

When an agent hits a sign-in form, it verifies itself to 1Password with a unique digital key. You then see which login it wants and why, and approve or deny the request on your own device. If you approve, 1Password fills the credential straight into the sign-in form instead of sending it to the agent, and the agent carries on with the task while your password stays in 1Password.

“Every major shift in technology changes how people sign in, and personal agents are the biggest one since the web,” said John Torrey, Chief Business Officer at 1Password, in a statement to iPhone in Canada on Thursday. He added that 1Password for Agents gives people “a safe way to let agents do the work without handing over their passwords.”

“The old model where you hand over a credential and hope for the best doesn’t work,” said Aashish Tripathi, chief product officer at 1Password. He added that an agent should be able to do its job “without getting permanent access to everything behind the account.”

At launch, 1Password is working with Muse from Meta, Anthropic’s Claude Duet, OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work, SpaceXSI’s Grok Bot and Town. Other partners include Browserbase, Browser Use, Dana, Instinct, KERNEL, Perplexity, Ramp, Tomo and Wajo, with more integrations to come.

Nat Friedman, head of product at Meta Superintelligence Labs, said he’s used 1Password since 2007 and described Muse as “like an AI personal assistant” that 1Password “gives safe access to services, at your direction.” Tido Carriero, head of product at SpaceXSI, said that with 1Password, “Grok Bot can sign in when it needs to without asking people to share or paste their passwords.”

This builds on what 1Password started in July, when it let Claude log in to websites without seeing your passwords. 1Password for Agents takes that same approval idea and opens it up to many more agents. Earlier this year, the company also added native iPhone integration and a new transfer tool.

If you want to give it a try, you can sign up for 1Password on its website.
