Why Brand-New iPhone Duos Are Getting Green Lines in One Spot

iPhone Duo hinge teardown from JerryRigEverything video

Fresh reports of cracked iPhone Duo screens now have a teardown to go with them.

It points at a specific hinge part as the reason some brand-new units are developing green lines and cracks in the same spot on the inner display.

Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything opened up an iPhone Duo in a new video posted Monday, after those owner complaints started circulating. He argues dust getting into the hinge and a failing hinge component are two separate problems that can both wreck the folding screen.

Nelson says unused Duos he never handled have started showing green lines in identical places. That pattern lines up with what owners have been describing for days, including a crunching sound before a crack appears along the crease.

Dust finds a way in

Once the folding display came off, sand and grit were packed into the hinge cavity. Nelson notes that an IP68 rating is tested with the phone sitting still in a lab, not folding open and shut in everyday dirt. The shields around the circuit boards kept debris away from the electronics, but the hinge itself filled up quickly.

In his earlier durability test, a short dip in dirt was enough to jam the phone so it would not close. He now says each black spot on that unit was likely a grain pressing into the soft back of the flexible panel. One grain is enough to ruin the folding screen.

A hinge part under suspicion

Dust alone does not explain brand-new phones cracking in one location. Nelson focuses on a small hinge component sitting exactly where those green lines appear. He believes it can break and poke the display from behind, which would match the bump under the crease that several owners have reported.

That theory sits close to what iFixit found in its own Duo teardown. CT scans there clustered the damage near the centre hinge support, and a simulation suggested a support bar that fails to drop far enough could create a stress hotspot when the phone closes.

Away from the hinge, the teardown still shows familiar Apple repair choices. The two batteries use electrically released adhesive and total 4,883 mAh, the logic board is a single stack with an A20 Pro above a vapour chamber, and the USB-C port is modular.

For Canadian buyers, a bad screen gets expensive fast. The Duo starts at $2,999 CAD, and an out-of-warranty inner display replacement is $1,499 CAD.

On Monday, Apple said it is “aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units,” and told owners who hit display problems to contact AppleCare for a replacement. That lines up with the cracking reports we covered as complaints piled up after launch. Nelson says first-generation owners deserve long-term coverage on that inner screen if dust and hinge stress keep showing up this early.

Would a hinge-related screen crack on a brand-new Duo change how you feel about buying Apple’s first foldable?
