Fring: VoIP for the iPhone–Skype, MSN, Gtalk, etc!

Hey folks, we have the app you’ve been waiting for! It’s a free VoIP application for the iPhone and it’s called Fring. It will enable your jailbreaked iPhone to “Skype®, MSN®, Google Talk™, ICQ, Twitter, Yahoo!™ & AIM® buddies mobile on your iPhone, allowing you to make free calls over WiFi & enjoy rich, IM-style chat with them using internet connection”…now that is awesome!

How to Install Fring on your Jailbreaked iPhone (read up here for more info)

Step 1: Launch Installer. Go to Sources. Click Edit. Click Add. Enter this source URL: http://fring.com/iphone.xml

Step 2: Refresh Sources. Go to the Install tab. Choose “fring” and install the app! Here are some screenshots courtesy of fring blog:

Check out the following video from our folks at fring:

I’ve installed fring and have successfully hooked up MSN and Skype. Here are some of my “tips”. When adding my Skype credentials to Communities, it was hanging for a long time. Eventually my “auto lock” shut the screen off and cancelled the login. So I set it to 5 mins and after 2-3 mins it finally logged in. After that, I tried the SkypeOut via the Dialer and it worked like a charm! Just remember to add “+1” before the area code and number when dialing (thanks JP!). MSN calls worked flawlessly. This app rocks the house!!!

I couldn’t get the dialer to work. I hooked up Skype ok, (had the same hanging problems as you, but eventually got it to work), and can see my list of contacts there. But I couldn’t get any calls to go out, to contacts thorugh skype or thorugh the dialer. Anyone else have problems with this?

Same here.

I got skype connected, tried to make a “Skype Out” call and it went to the screen that it looked like it was calling but did not work. Was trying to call my house phone but nothing.

I can make phone calls to anywhere in the world (including home phones) for free correct? as long as I’m connected to a wireless connection correct?

thanks

I’m running 1.1.4.

The problem lies with your Skype login I think. I had all the problems you guys are talking about prior to getting it to work.

It took FOREVER for the “subscribe” message to go away and finalize. Once it did, I was able to use my SkypeOut to call!

OMG! This is honestly the best iPhone app ever. Subscribing to Skype takes a while but eventually finished. I suppose that you need to have SkypeOut subscription with money inside to have the SkypeOut feature in Fring to work. Like iPhone Fan said, you must dial +1 (for Canada) in front of the area code and phone number.

Skype loaded up my contacts nicely, same thing for MSN. Oh, by the way, I am running firmware 1.1.4.

I’m using an iPod Touch 3G / 3rd Generation, with firmware 3.1.2.

I used this to connect to my home Asterisk based PBX (PBX in a Flash), and it worked like a charm! The iPod and Fring even let me use my Blackberry hands free kit.

Next to try it with a Bluetooth headset…

One problem is the iPod sleeping though. I found that the only way I can reliably get incoming calls is if I disable auto-lock and leave Fring open. I can’t imagine I’ll get much out of the battery this way.

Outgoing calls work flawlessly though! Awesome app. I wouldn’t have bought an iPod without this functionality.
