Review:

Our Mini Boombox unit came in black color, but you have the option to choose from black-red and white colors as well. Opening up the package reveals a Mini Boombox speaker, a USB charging cable, a power adapter and a couple of user manuals. I really like the inclusion of a power adapter since majority of USB powered devices don’t come bundled with one, assuming you already own a universal USB charger like the one supplied with iPhone or iPad.

Measuring less than 5 inches in width, the Mini Boombox is an attractive looking speaker. The front consists of a black oval speaker grille with a Logitech logo at the bottom, which glows blue when the speaker is turned on. The rear of the speaker hosts an On/Off switch, a USB port (for charging only) and an Aux-in jack. The bottom has non-slip rubber fit to keep it from moving around at higher volumes.

The top of Mini Boombox is made up of glossy black plastic which hosts the touch-sensitive controls. You have red colored back-lit buttons for volume, play/pause, previous and next track as well as one for Bluetooth phone pairing. A small built-in microphone is also located at the top. The touch-sensitive controls respond very well to touch and provide handy volume control and music navigation, especially when you’ve left your device at a distance. You can also take a phone call from here.

The compact light-weight speaker is perfect for carrying around in a backpack. It weighs approximately 8 ounces and is smaller than the palm of an adult hand. It is worth mentioning that even though the Mini Boombox is not a heavy speaker, the overall build quality is pretty durable and feels like it can easily survive minor bumps and falls.

Pairing the Mini Boombox with an iPhone or iPad is incredibly easy. Just tap and hold the Bluetooth pairing button on the speaker’s top to put it in discovery mode (indicated by flashing Logitech logo at the front of speaker). Then search for it from your device and tap Mini Boombox to complete the process.

The Mini Boombox sounds just as good as it looks, delivering loud and clear audio with plenty of bass for a speaker of its size. I was actually amazed at the punchy bass coming out of such a tiny device. Compared to the X-Mini KAI speakers we reviewed a couple of weeks ago, they are both louder and boomier. The only downfall I noticed was that cranking the volume beyond 90% produced a slight bit of distortion which quite frankly, is nothing to worry about since the Mini Boombox is pretty damn loud even at 80%. I listened to tracks from various genres including R&B, Hip-Hop and Trance, all downloaded at 320kbps quality.

During my tests, I got well over 8 hours of non-stop playback over Bluetooth on a single charge as opposed to X-Mini which gave me around 4 hours. Finally, taking handsfree calls was actually the most impressive feature of all. The sound quality of phone calls was extremely clear with excellent microphone sensitivity.

Conclusion:

The Mini Boombox is undeniably an amazing product from Logitech. With its pleasing design, touch-sensitive navigation controls, a surprising bass response and excellent handsfree call quality, it’s surely one of the best portable Bluetooth speakers in the market for under a 100 bucks.
