The McDonald’s iPhone App Launches Apple Pay for Mobile Orders in Canada

Mcdonald s apple pay

Your fast food mobile orders are now going to complete even faster, as McDonald’s has added Apple Pay support to its iPhone app. This was a feature for the American version of the app for a while now, but has only made its way to Canada as of this week.

When the MyMcD’s iPhone app launched mobile ordering in the fall of 2017, it only accepted Visa, Mastercard and American Express for in-app payments. In August of 2018, Visa Debit and Debit Mastercard were added as additional payment options.

Fast forward to 2020, and the MyMcD’s has finally added Apple Pay as a payment method for mobile orders, part of the app’s version 6.1.0 update.

Benefits of Apple Pay for mobile orders? Your transaction details are secure and never shared with merchants. This means fraudsters cannot get your credit card or debit card numbers, as each Apple Pay transaction uses tokenization for payment details.

Apple Pay may have prevented a string of thefts blamed on the MyMcD’s app, where Canadians lost thousands of dollars, from fraudulent transactions. Those who used credit cards for payment details easily had their charges reversed. Those who had their debit cards in the MyMcD’s app had a more difficult time recovering funds scammed (you should never use a debit card for in-app payments or online transactions; it’s Internet 101).

McDonald’s still maintained the app was secure, even after numerous reports of Canadians getting payment details hacked from the app. If only two-factor authentication was another layer of security in the fast food app.

How to setup Apple Pay with mobile ordering in the McDonald’s iPhone app?

In the MyMcD’s app, navigate to the More tab (bottom right) > Profile > Payment Methods > Apple Pay.

Once you’ve enabled this, you’ll see the Apple Pay option during the checkout process, ahead of confirming your mobile order.
