Yahoo News Digest for iOS Adds Canadian and International Editions [Hands-On]

Yahoo News Digest for iOS launched back in January exclusively in the U.S. and UK, but wasn’t available in Canada—until now. The app has been updated to include Canadian and International editions.

Here’s what’s Yahoo News Digest delivers:

Every morning and night, Yahoo News Digest delivers a summarized version of the top news, in an easy-to-navigate design. Using algorithmic and human editorial curation, each story is a collection of “atoms” — articles, maps, Wikipedia  entries, videos, and photos — that make it easy to “digest” the news quickly. The international edition is compiled by our editors in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Malaysia to offer round-the-clock updates. We then deliver a timely Digest at 8am and 6pm local time, wherever you are in the world.

When we downloaded this update last night we were sceptical of the app, but it’s actually pretty cool if you don’t have time to scan news headlines (like myself) and want two curated news digests sent your way daily.

Here are some screenshots of the app:

The app is elegantly designed and can be controlled by gestures. Stories cite references and also have relevant embedded tweets. Story titles have ‘atoms’ located underneath, which are items such as key quotes, images, videos, stock tickers, maps, infographs, and Wikipedia excerpts. This gives you a quick overview of what to expect in each story.

There’s also a countdown timer giving you a visual of when your next digest will arrive and you can also go back and read previous digests too. Overall, this is a slick app that almost reminds me somewhat of Circa (with longer and more interesting articles, in particular Canadian content), but with daily digests instead.
