Apple Rumoured to be Developing 20-inch Foldable MacBook

Apple may be working to develop an all-new foldable MacBook, according to recent rumours. Aside from rumoured foldable smartphones, this would be the first attempt at introducing a foldable piece of tech in the Apple ecosystem.

The industry has been mainly eyeing Apple to see when it would launch a foldable smartphone. However, it may appear as though foldable may not only come in the form of an iPhone as far as Apple is concerned. According to display analyst Ross Young (via Tom’s Guide), Apple is working on the development of a foldable 20-inch MacBook.

“We are now showing Apple in our roadmap for foldable notebooks. We hear there is interest at the largest size yet,” Young stated in the report.

Young claims that Apple will introduce the foldable MacBook as a dual-use product for consumers. It’s said that while folded, the product will work as a functional monitor and on-screen keyboard. However, when unfolded, the MacBook will work solely as a monitor and may pair with an external Magic Keyboard. From the sounds of it, Apple plans to introduce the device as a brand new product category as it previously did with the first iPad.

It does seem as though the device is still far away from potentially reaching consumers. While Young discussed the use of UHD and 4K display resolution, he admits that the launch of the foldable tech is “likely later” than 2025. It’s estimated that Apple may release the product between 2026 and 2027.

Apple’s foldable iPhone is said to be launching in 2023. Though, supply chain consultants have said the rumoured device may have been delayed until 2025.

Apple doesn’t seem to be in any discernable rush to launch its first foldable device. Between rumours of an iPhone and now a rumoured foldable MacBook, there’s a lot to look forward to. Of course, there’s no official confirmation so take the report with a grain of salt. However, if this is true, it will be important that Apple learns from the missteps of other companies.
