Apple Partnering With LG to Develop Foldable OLED Displays for iPads and MacBooks

Apple is reportedly partnering with LG Display to develop foldable OLED displays for upcoming models of its iPads and MacBooks.

As reported by The Elec, LG Display will be supplying HP with 17-inch foldable 4K OLED panels this year. This display will likely be used on an in-folding notebook featuring an 11-inch display when closed. The company has also supplied Lenovo its 13.3-inch display panel for the ThinkPad X1 Fold. However, LG Display is said to also be working with Apple.

The report continues to state that Apple is collaborating with LG Display “to develop another foldable OLED panel.” It’s said that the new panel will utilize an ultra-thin cover glass rather than polyimide, which is commonly found on other foldable displays.

This supports earlier reports that point to the possibility of Apple developing larger foldable devices such as an iPad and MacBook. Display analyst Ross Yong previously stated that Apple may be looking into foldable notebooks featuring a display of 20-inches.

Young went on to say that the product will be treated as its own category of “dual-use” devices in Apple’s catalogue. It will likely reach the standards of UHD and 4K display resolutions. However, the analyst believes any such product reaching consumers’ hands may still be years away.

The launch of a foldable notebook, whether iPad or MacBook, is said to be “likely later” than 2025. Based on Young’s predictions, the device may see the light of day between 2026 and 2027.

Why create separate foldable iPads, and separate foldable Mac’s. Why not create one foldable device that is both an iPad, and a Mac in one physical device. That makes much more sense for customers, especially since M1 Mac’s can run iOS apps. But instead Apple wants to sell their customers two separate devices, which ultimately means more money for Apple, and more costly for Apple’s customers.

Apple and Steve Jobs use to talk about user experience, but clearly having two separate devices, is actually a worse user experience for customers. The best thing for customers would be only one physical device that is both an iPad and a Mac. Apple only truly cares about money, where as convenience, and user experience, has taken a back seat with Apple for many years now.

What does it mean to be both a Mac and an iPad and how would that device not lose the benefits of the individual devices? It’s sort of like asking why Ford makes both pickup trucks and compact cars instead of one vehicle that is both. It doesn’t really make much sense and it would no longer have the benefits of either so consumers who have the needs for either one will go elsewhere. I have no interest in an iPad and heavily use my Mac, if they make a Mac less useful to me by making it more like an iPad I would need to go elsewhere. Having less choice is not better for a consumer. This is also not an Apple specific devision but a standard industry devision of phones, tablets, and computers.

I can see them only releasing foldables once the tech is more refined. No one wants a foldable that messes up and suddenly the screen is warped or stretched or distorted after too many folds.

Yup. Others rushed theirs out and they were a disaster. Rushing just to come first just means you end up with a premature mess.

Until they actually figure out how to fold glass, and keep the price reasonable, I’m not really interested. Certainly not if it feels like the Samsung Fold which felt like a child’s toy when I played with it in the store.

What I wish Apple would start working on is batteries, which I consider to be the biggest problem with mobile tech. With Apple’s deep pockets they might find something new that actually solves problems with current batteries.

Not sure what problem being able to fold a laptop screen solves.

Clearly you never used a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, because that is one wicked smartphone/tablet device. Its the first real 2 in 1 smartphone and tablet device. It would be like Apple creating a iPhone an iPad in one physical device.

But alas Apple will never be able to make a device like that, because Apples app ecosystem and iOS are not conducive towards a foldable device like that. That is 100% a fact. Especially since Apple went out of their way to encourage their developers to create separate iPhone apps, and create separate iPad apps. That is not conducive towards a 2 in 1 foldable device, like the Z Fold 3. Plus Apple went even further down the path of separation, when Apple decided to separate iOS for iPhones, and iPadOS for iPads. Making it now impossible for Apple to even think about making a 2 in 1 foldable like the Z Fold 3.

So you can go on your pretend rant that the Z Fold 3 is a toy, but that so called toy can do real work, with split screen multitasking, something that no iPhone can do today. The iPhone 13 pro max is nothing more than a glorified palm pilot that switches and halts every task that you switch away from. Its 2022 and a iPhone still can’t run multiple apps simultaneously on its 6.7″ screen. I can run 5 apps simultaneously on that Z Fold 3 tablet screen. Apple loves to talk about how fast their iPhones are compared to the competition, but no iPhone can run more than 1 app at one time. What a joke! Get back to me when an iPhone can run multiple apps simultaneously.

Didn’t I just write that I played with it in the store and thought it felt like a cheap toy? Literally, I remember once buying my toddlers a toy that had a similar feeling screen.

I don’t use an Iphone, but if I did and Apple created a folding one that felt like the Fold 3, I wouldn’t waste my money on it, whereas my Note 10 plus and the Iphone 13 pro max feel premium and I assume the S22 does also.

With respect to your second paragraph, ok, maybe true, but they could change their minds. They have done that before. We’ll have to wait and see.

So you can go on your pretend rant that the Z Fold 3 is a toy,

You really should grow up. First of all I didn’t “rant,” secondly my opinion is just that, my opinion. I wasn’t expressing anything that was fact other than how I felt about it. You don’t have to agree or like it. That doesn’t make what I wrote untrue. Unlike some people, yourself included, I’m neither a fanboy or hater. I’m entitled to feel the way I do about products and these companies that make them. I have no problem calling out Apple and Samsung and their products and I do it regularly and I have no agenda.
