Apple’s ‘AirTag’ Tile Competitor May Feature Removable Coin Cell Battery

Apple’s now heavily rumoured ‘AirTag’, the item tracking device comparable to the Tile, may feature a removable coin cell battery.

MacRumors has reported that Apple’s new trackable tag will likely be powered by a removable CR2032 coin cell battery. This places the AirTag in a similar light when compared to Tile’s ‘Tile Pro’, which is powered by the same coin cell battery.

As coin cells are single-use batteries, users will supposedly be able to unscrew the back of the AirTag in order to remove the battery. For comparison’s sake, a CR2032 battery will typically last a full year of use when powering the Tile Pro. Users may expect a similar battery life when using the AirTag.

With AirTag, users can pair the device with their iOS devices and attach it to items such as keys, wallets, luggage, and other valuables. Working in conjunction with the ‘Find My’ app, users can keep track of the AirTag if they lose track of the item. AirTag will supposedly also be able to emit a sound ping to help locate the item.

The existence of the AirTag was discovered through references found within the iOS 13.2 code. Although Apple has yet to confirm the existence of the AirTag, the device has been heavily rumoured to release in 2020.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo speculated that Apple may release the Tile competitor in early 2020. However, it’s unclear whether or not the spread of coronavirus has affected the company’s release schedule.
