Apple’s New MacBook Pros Will Reportedly Have Upgraded Displays and Bring Back MagSafe Charger

Apple is reportedly developing two new models of its MacBook Pro to release later this year. A 14-inch and 16-inch device is said to be in the works with a new design, upgraded displays, the removal of the Touch Bar, and the long-awaited return of the MagSafe charger.

According to Bloomberg‘s latest report, sources have said that the new MacBook Pro models will feature Apple’s very own processor, “upgraded with more cores and enhanced graphics”. Along with the processor, Apple will supposedly be incorporating a display that will be brighter and has higher contrast.

What many long-time MacBook users will likely look forward to is the news that Apple could be planning to bring the MagSafe charger back into the fold. For the previous five years, Apple has adopted USB-C charging in exchange for the magnetic power adapter. It’s been a favourite of MacBook users over the course of the product’s history. According to sources, the return of the MagSafe charger will allow the MacBook Pro to charge at a faster rate while also keeping it safe if the cord were to be yanked in any fashion. Although Apple may be exchanging the USB-C charger for the MagSafe, it’s said that “multiple” USB-C ports will be featured on the new models.

The MacBook Pro Touch Bar, which first appeared in 2016, may be removed. Apple is rumoured to be testing versions that do not feature the OLED Touch Bar, hinting at the return of physical keys. While many users have become accustomed to the displays the Touch Bar may have, others argue it comes at a cost of reliability.

As for the design, Bloomberg‘s sources say the two models will have a similar look to the current versions. However, MacRumors‘ latest report notes that Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that it will have a design very close to the iPhone 12. They will apparently have no curved edges, giving it a more flat-edged design. If correct, this will be the most drastic design change seen on the MacBook Pro in many years.

Kuo’s notes also back up Bloomberg’s sources of the removal of the Touch Bar, Apple processor being featured, and return of the MagSafe charger.

In terms of a release timeline, it’s expected that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro will release sometime during Q3 2021. Kuo expects that the redesign and improved features will spike demand up 25 to 30 percent year-over-year, with upwards of 20 million units sold.
