Is Your iOS 4.3.3 iPhone Signal Cutting Out On Fido?

After recently updating my (non-jailbroken) iPhone 4 to iOS 4.3.3, I immediately noticed that my Fido signal drops out completely and then resets itself immediately about twice every 24 hours.

For example, the Fido signal will do something like this:

  • 5 Bars > 4 Bars > 3 Bars > 2 Bars > 1 Bar > No Bars/Fido word/3G disappears > One second delay > 5 Bars/3G/Fido word back instantly

If I’m in an app checking mail, or any other app using an Internet connection, the popup “could not activate cellular data network” would appear during the one second delay mentioned above.

After swapping SIM cards, doing various restores and resets, the issue continues.

As a blogger, I am constantly using my iPhone. I’m also always watching my signal bars, especially with the iPhone 4. So when I see my bars drop and cellular network errors appear, I notice immediately. Also, I have not experienced this in previous versions of iOS.

Curious to get more information, I sourced a bunch of my local Vancouver colleagues who all use a non-jailbroken iOS 4.3.3 iPhone 4 on Fido. I spoke to 23 people and all have experienced the same behaviour as me. I also spoke to folks on Rogers and Telus, but they did not report any unusual findings.

So, I come to you Community with this query:

  • Are you on Fido, using a non-jailbroken iPhone on iOS 4.3.3 and experiencing what I detailed above?

Or

  • Are you on another carrier using a non-jailbroken iPhone on iOS 4.3.3 and experiencing what I detailed above?

The photo below is me just catching the pop-up error about to show up and signal cutting out:

I have experienced exactly the same thing on a non-jailbroken iPhone 4 bought unlocked from Apple. It’s frustrating.

I’m have noticed this issue as well. I have not upgraded from 4.3.2 yet so I don’t think it’s the update.

I experienced something similar too. It seems Fido signal sometime drops out for no apparent reason. I thought it might have something to do with my jailbroken iPhone. I guess this is happening to many even without jailbroken phones. Like to know what Fido/Apple going to do.

Rogers and I have been together for for 15 years now. Its a give and take relationship so any chance I get to take I always take advantage of it. This time I needed more minutes to use a month..so it worked for me.

This is happening on my Rogers (recently jail broken) device running iOS 4.3.2. It started happening when I upgraded to 4.3.2 and continued even after I jail broke my device.

Does anyone know the correct carrier version number required for ios 4.3.3 and the Rogers network?

@BrodieTheDog I agree it’s not the update as I’m on an iPhone 3G IOS 4.2.1 and have experienced this carrier signal loss at least twice a day sometimes much more often for a few weeks now. I thought it was only Fido but it appears to affect others. It can’t be sunspot activity but it may be something beyond Fido. But what?

I have not updated to 4.3.3, but I had this issue for the first 5 or 6 months since I got my iPhone, which was really a pain in the ass! But starting from 2 or 3 months ago it has never happened again.

My guess is the issue is related to Fido network, not the iOS or the hardware.

I have had this issue since the 4.2 update. I’m on Telus and I never had such a problem for the first six months of owning my iphone 4. And no, it’s not jailbroken.

Not limited to 4.3.3. I still use 4.1 and this happens all the time recently. I assumed it was a problem on their end.

Agreed. It’s been since December or so, find that I have to Airplane it as well. Though I should add, I don’t think this is limited to the iPhone 4 as it happens on my 3GS.

I’ve had this problem for quite some time now (non jailbroken iPhone 4 Rogers), but only the bars issue.. After updating to 4.3.3 I have noticed a few times that I’ll get the “couldn’t activate cell data network” popup as well and by the time I’ve looked up at the bars theyll be flashing back on again. But like some others said, I’ve had it in different manifestations for ages now, doesn’t bother me anymore.

I have a factory unlocked iPhone 4 (4.3.2) on Fido and I haven’t seen this issue, however I updated my girlfriends locked iPhone 4 to 4.3.2 a couple of days before 4.3.3 came out and she is now experiencing this problem.

We have one phone experiencing this on 4.3.2 on Fido in Ottawa
