Canadians are now complete. All of our iPhone carriers have confirmed they will support the Personal Hotspot feature coming next week in iOS 4.3. First it was Rogers/Fido, then Telus, and now Bell/Virgin. It’s true–our telecom giants do like to make moves in unison.
Our friends at MobileSyrup received confirmation from Bell:
“Yes, we will.. All our in-market plans support this use and we advise existing customers to check and see if their plan covers the use too.â€
…and Virgin:
“Regarding the iPhone upgrade, when Apple makes this available, Members can go in to iTunes to get the upgrade and yes, they will be able to use the Mobile Hotspot. No restriction on plan or anything. However, Members will of course still be charged for any data use outside of their plan so they should make sure they have the right plan for the amount of data they’ll needâ€
So there you have it, bring on Personal Hotspot in iOS 4.3! It’s coming next Friday on March 11th.

I don’t know why all people were worried about this feature supported or not supported by some carriers…
Wifi hotspot is tied to the tethering feature of the iPhone… If tethering is enabled on your account, wifi hotspot is automatically supported…

Just so everyone knows…. the WiFi Hotspot is only on Iphone 4. The 3GS does however get the ability to tether an iPad using Bluetooth.
It’s important to note that the Personal Hotpot feature is going to be iPhone 4 only. I think many 3G and 3GS users are going to be disappointed. I wonder if there is a technical reason behind this decision (battery life maybe?).
Also noticed something else on Apple’s website. You will only be able to connect 3 devices through Wi-Fi. When they say 5 devices, they mean 3 Wi-Fi + 1 Bluetooth + 1 USB.
It’s a total of 5 devices… Between 3 on wifi, 3 on bluetooth and one on USB…
Nothing technical. Just a decision Apple made to exclude the 3GS. Much like how Apple excluded the 3G from custom home screen wallpapers.
And yes the 5 devices are 3 Wifi + 1 Bluetooth + 1 USB.
I am so glad I bought a wifi only iPad.
It’s funny and while I’ve never seen the US contracts Apple has with their carriers, in Canada, at least the control requirements I’ve seen from Apple state the carrier MUST provide tethered data at no additional charge. Would be interesting if Apple’s interpretation of the wifi hotspot feature is the same
Just so you people know Rogers has decided to be dumb and REQUIRE you to have 1GB of data MINIMUM to enable WiFi hotspot

all tethering plans before iOS 4.3…
