Apple Releases iOS 4.0.1 For iPhone

As predictions would have it, this morning Apple released iOS 4.0.1 (8A306) for iPhone 3G, 3GS, and iPhone 4. This is a minor update to firmware 4.0.

Yesterday, Apple released a beta of iOS 4.1 to developers that included many more enhancements but firmware 4.0.1 today addresses only the formula used to determine how many bars of signal to display (you’ll see the difference immediately) on the iPhone 3G/3GS/4.

Below are the updates in firmware 4.0.1:

This update contains bug fixes and improvements, including the following:

• Improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display

iOS 4.0.1 is available now in iTunes.

Remember, if your iPhone is jailbroken and/or unlocked or you are thinking about jailbreaking and/or unlocking your iPhone, you should not immediately update to 4.0.1, as you may lose the ability to jailbreak and unlock.

Update: After updating to iOS 4.0.1, I’ve noticed only one thing. Where I used to get 4-5 bars around town, I now get 2-3 bars. Apple has effectively turned my Vancouver-based Rogers iPhone 3GS into a Vancouver-based AT&T iPhone 3GS. My signal now looks worse than usual, everywhere. Apple has perceptually turned all iPhones on 4.0.1 into displaying the signal of AT&T devices. Wonderful.

Download Links (DO NOT update to 4.0.1 via iTunes if you want to keep your iPhone “jailbroken”):

iPhone 4 – 4.01

iPhone 3GS – 4.01

iPhone 3G – 4.01

Is that seriously the only change? What about its complete failure at multitasking and battery drainage for no reason at all? 🙁 I was hoping to see an actual improvement and not just some fluffy graphical interface fix. What about addressing the actual problems of iOS4? I am not in the least bit tempted to upgrade to an iPhone 4, especially with the reception problems. What's going on with them? It seems like iPhone development is going downhill. Maybe they'll get back on track with it by the time Fido lets me upgrade, which is gonna be a while so they have some time to work with….

iOS 4.1 is in the works. Give it 2-3 weeks and that'll be out. It will likely improve on at least some of your issues.

2-3 weeks seems to soon in my mind. I personally think 4.1 will be released along side the iPad version. Or it will be a unified version as the rumor I read.

Who knows. Reasons to keep checkin to iphoneincanada 😉

“I should do a commercial for iphoneincanada” lol

Ok, maybe you're right. I took a look at the release schedule of the iPhone OS 3.1 beta schedule as a comparison.
Beta 1 was out on June 30th.
Beta 2 was out on July 15th.
Full release was on September 9th.

So I suppose it could be more like 8 weeks till release, but who knows… could be sooner.

True that. Lol. If they're done. I think they're putting the final touches on it as @comex released the source code earlier this morning probably allowing others to help him put the new jailbreak together.

Where is the final release date? Holy man, what is the issue? I don't even care about the reception issue because I plan on buying a case for it anyways. I just want a date so I can book the morning off lol.

Are bars back to where they were before the 2.1 update? AFAIK, that's the last time they tweaked the signal strength formula.

I'm not sure I get why some people don't like the new signal calculations. The old method used to give me full bars in one spot and one foot over I'd get one bar. The thing is, in the location where it gave full bars, it was totally lying, it could barely get a connection. The old system gave full bars way too easily. It was usually an all or nothing thing, though the odd time I did see mid bars. I'm personally glad it's giving medium bars, especially if you're in a downtown area because the concrete jungle is not full bars despite the way it used to lie to me saying it had full reception. I am also talking from a tri-country perspecitve, not just canada or one city.

What does your last comment mean? Your signal is level reading is actually now relevant. You're seeing the actual signal Rogers provides where you are… How does that have anything to do with AT&T?

I agree with you but it's just a little shocking to be in an area that normally is fast 3G with 5 bars and that now has “No Service” displayed.

for some reason i picture a chef who calls himself a 5 star chef when all he makes is burritos lol 2Star tops
but 5 makes him feel all warm an fuzzy inside. Perhaps people like to see 5? lol

EX. Question… Yes the Bars Appear to have gone from 5 to 2-3. aside from the display do you notice any degradation of your actual call quality or strength? or is this purely cosmetic?

Ex

Normally, no. The 5 bar quality seems to be the same as the 3 bar quality. However, I am getting “No Service” in more areas now that I usually had really good speeds.

I was getting “No Service” today too, and i have not updated yet. 3G has been a little funky today. i think rogers may be doing maintenance or something

Because it's not accurate. After the update, I am getting “No Service” in areas that I usually had awesome speeds!

This would be a little more interesting if I could actually buy an iPhone 4 and see what all the talk is about. Also, I'm wondering why the rest of the world isn't complaining about reception issues. My friend in London England says he's heard NO complaints about the iPhone 4 in England. Could it be this is an AT&T issue that's been blown way out of proportion? Just sayin.

4 bars at home on my 3G and the tower is just about 500meters from where I live….
Performance has been exactly the same as before. I'm anxious to see what it is like in an elevator at work where I am able to get a signal.

i think apple released this update to make the iphone 3g and 3gs antenna signal look bad compare to iphone 4

I can't brag about getting five bars everywhere now. I only have two now. This won't change how the phone works, but I wonder how many more complaints Rogers/Bell/Telus will get.

I do hope for this. Or may be they'll be now waiting till official 4.1 release? As far as 4.0.1 update is just cosmetic and doesn't fix any bugs.
