Apple To Release iPhone Firmware 3.1 On September 25?

Many of you may be wondering where has iPhone firmware 3.1 been lately? If you recall, the last beta update, beta 3, was announced and released on July 27 2009. That is well over a month ago and is very peculiar considering that Apple has the tendency to release firmware beta updates every two weeks.

In other words, Beta 3 could possibly be the GM release of firmware 3.1.

Well, if a posting from AT&T means anything, we could see the final release of firmware 3.1 show up on September 25 2009.

As many of you know, AT&T iPhone 3G/3GS customers did not have MMS activated right away with the release of firmware 3.0 as Rogers/Fido did here in Canada. However, AT&T has recently indicated that on September 25 2009, its iPhone 3G/3GS customers will have MMS available to them via a software update. You can check out the annoucement below:

We know many of our iPhone customers are eager for an update on our rollout schedule for Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). We’ve been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches – and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day.

Traditionally, updates to enable such features as MMS or Tethering come in the form of IPCC file updates, such as when Rogers/Fido updated their IPCC files from 4.0 to 4.1 in mid-June 2009. On the other hand, the software update indicated by AT&T could very well be the final firmware 3.1, but the announcement from AT&T is not very specific.
