BREAKING: iPhone Firmware 3.1 Beta 3 Now Available To Developers

Earlier Monday (July 27), Apple pushed out the iPhone SDK 3.1 Beta 3 and the iPhone 3.1 Firmware Beta 3 (7C116a). This comes just one day shy of two weeks since the release of iPhone firmare 3.1 Beta 2 on July 14, 2009.

Firmware 3.1 Beta 2 is set to expire July 28, 2009 at 12:00AM which is extremely short notice when compared to previous beta builds that usually expired within 10 days.

Below are the changes in the Firmware 3.1 Beta 3 update:

  • iPhone no longer vibrates when you move apps on the Home Screen
  • Baseband updated to 05.11.04
  • Tethering Data Counter underneath the Cellular Network Data counter (New order is: Battery Percentage, Time since last full charge, Call Time, Cellular Network Data, Tethering Data)
  • The “.123” button on the keyboard now reads “_123”
  • Can now copy/paste videos into emails, similar to how you would copy/paste photos
  • Support for augmented reality applications. Augmented Reality applications can be seen here such as ‘Layar’ or New York Nearest Subway.
  • If you have Name Display with Rogers/Fido, the iPhone now supports it

Remember, if you have your iPhone/iPod Touch jailbroken or unlocked, you should not update to 3.1 when it is released, as you will lose both your jailbreak and unlock.

Also note that Firmware 3.1 Beta 3, as did Beta 2, continues to prevent users from using IPCC hacks to enable tethering on their iPhone. Currently, this seems to only be affecting AT&T users.

The official release of Firmware 3.1 is expected sometime in early September 2009.
