[Update] Google Revamped Mobile Interface Hits Canada

Update: Other users are now seeing this propagate to Google.ca:

It appears Google is slowly rolling out its revamped mobile search interface, introducing a new bar up top allowing for quick and easy access to Gmail, Reader, Web, and Calendar for Google.ca. These icons appeared this morning in Google Reader on my iPhone, but they don’t show up for Search just yet. The ‘More’ tab brings access to other Google services such as Picasa, YouTube, Google Docs, Google Talk, Maps, News, Tasks, Translate, and Books.

This new interface was first spotted on the web back in late May. The new ‘tabbed’ look brings a tasteful new element to the previously mundane Google mobile site.

Is this new interface appearing on your iPhone?

I don’t really understand the point of the Google App when all of its contents are available as stand alone apps.  Like, why would I open Google and then open Youtube when it’s already sitting there on my springboard?  Why would I open Google and then click Docs when I can just open my docs with a bookmark?

I’m sure I’m missing something here – please let me know as I am a huge Google Apps user.  Thanks.

This change seems useless and it’s kind of annoying. First, for people who only use one service from Google, this provides you with nothing besides clutter. Second, speaking of clutter, it takes up a lot of space at the top of the page which I find unnecessary.

Make a proper application for these web apps or leave them be. Having them all integrated nicely with tabs is not feasible for web apps. A better idea would just be have an app home page. This type of integration requires an actual app.

They are giving Apple the finger by showing them that they don’t need to offer their services via apps 😛

I like to run the web based Latitude as it shows where I am on the map, my friend’s location and the traffic layer. The App does not give you the traffic option so it’s pretty useless.

Now these big fat icons take up some 20% of the valuable iPhone screen and there is no way to get rid of them. All I want is the Latitude map, not a bunch of icons that I have tried and don’t do much for me.

I can’t stand it. It’s sooo annoying! I constantly hit the stupid tabs at the top by accident. I really wish they just kept it like it was… If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
