More iOS Devices Sold In 2011 Than All Of Macs In Last 28 Years

In a recent interview with Fortune, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that Apple has sold 55 Million iPads till date. He further added that 37 Million iPhones have already been sold in 2012 with the total being around 175 Million since the device’s inception. In total, over 316 Million iOS devices have been sold so far. To put things in perspective, Asymco has created a chart of cumulative sales of Apple computing products according to which more iOS devices were sold in 2011 alone (156 Million) than all of Macs sold (122 Million) in the last 28 years.

Tim Cook on the 55 million iPads sold to date:

“This 55 is something no one would have guessed. Including us. To put it in context, it took us 22 years to sell 55 million Macs. It took us about 5 years to sell 22 million iPods, and it took us about 3 years to sell that many iPhones. And so, this thing is, as you said, it’s on a trajectory that’s off the charts.”

It is interesting to note that Mac sales are actually rising pretty fast with 2011 being the best year for Mac sales in Apple history and with upcoming Mountain Lion OS X update, the figures for 2012 will definitely peak higher than ever!
