Re-enabling DFU mode in Mac OS X 10.5.6 to Jailbreak and Unlock your iPhone
The other day, iPhone Fan posted about how the latest update to Mac OS X 10.5.6 had trouble recognizing the iPhone in DFU mode. The problem with this is that come December 31st, when the software unlock arrives for the iPhone, some people won’t be able to unlock their phones since you will need a jailbroken phone to complete the process. But fear not, a few simple steps have been announced to allow your iPhone to be recognized in DFU mode while using 10.5.6.
Before you begin this process, you need to make sure that you are logged into your Mac as the administrator, and when asked, you have to provide the administrator password.
- Next, you have to download the script from here.
- Once the file has downloaded, double click it to unzip the archive.
- Then double-click “FIX_DFU_10_5_6”.
- The readme opens up, click OK.
- A window will then pop-up telling you that the necessary caches for booting are being updated, and that a system restart will happen once complete. Click OK and wait approximately 30 seconds for it to complete and then restart.
Voila, just like that, DFU mode is now enabled in OS X 10.5.6, and you will be able to unlock your iPhone on December 31st! This is of course if you have the 2.11.07 or earlier baseband on your phone. Not having a Mac myself (yet), I haven’t been able to test this procedure out, but give it a try. I have spoken with a friend who tried it and it worked like a charm. Thanks to volkspost over at Hackint0sh who put together this simple one click solution. Let me know how it works for you by leaving a comment below!

The readme popped up and I clicked “OK”. Then I was asked to enter my password. After that, on the top bar, I could see something was going on. All my applications closed. My computer did not automatically restart. I’m going to restart now just in case. Unfortunately I have 2.28 so I don’t think I’ll be able to test whether or not I can jailbreak. Hopefully they come out with the real 2.2 jailbreak (and not just the 2.2 jailbreak with the 2.11.07 baseband jailbreak) in the new year for all of us who updated through iTunes!
well in the dev team blog they are saying that the unlock will be via the cydia app so we don’t need neither a pc nor a mac to unlock so i think the title of the post is wrong?
@harna Where on the blog did it mention that the unlock will be done via cydia?? Can you post a link please? I would love to read up on it 🙂 I tried looking but couldn’t find it
U can jailbreak. Use quickpwn. But U can’t unlock at the end of the month.
Ya, everytime I use quickpwn, it freezes after the “connecting to iPhone 3G” part. I’ll give it another try and wait 15 minutes this time, but usually it should connect right away. I’ve read a bunch of forums and people are having problems jailbreaking with 2.28 baseband and mac os x 10.5.6
Great info as usual!! I haven’t found a real need to jailbreak mine, but when it comes time, I will know where to look for the how to!!
one question, after we unlock then can we upgrade to 2.2. i’m sure the dev team
will explain the steps in detail.
Question: I will be in SE ASIA on Dec 31 and have the 2.1 2.11.07 version. It isn’t jailbroken yet, but if i jailbreak it now, can i UNLOCK it while I’m in SE Asia so I can use the networks there?
Works perfect on mac the 2.2.1, now i can dfu my iphone 2g without a problem, because without the file (FIX DFU 10.5.6) i wouldnt be able to fix my iphone.
Thanks guys
i hope you’re right Andre, am clicking ok base on ur comment! wish me luck.
