iPhoneTheSolution: StealthSIM Review/Contest!

This is the post that will matter to those still locked on a 1.1.2 iPhone. As I told you before, iPhoneTheSolution sent me a StealthSIM to review. And as I mentioned, after I post about the review I was going to give away the StealthSIM in a contest. That’s right baby, a free StealthSIM, worth $125US to Canadians looking for an unlock solution for their 1.1.2 iPhones! PLUS…I am also going to include a brand new Rogers SIM card into the mix! So that makes this contest worth about $150US in prizes! More details after the review!

The StealthSIM Chip

The StealthSIM is just one of the “dummy SIM” solutions out there that will unlock your OTB 1.1.2 iPhone. You have a lot of options out there, but reliability can be an issue with the proliferation of knock off TurboSIM’s and other SIM solutions. The StealthSIM has worked for many people out there. Now’s let’s put it to the test and see if it works as advertised. The chip itself is almost paper thin, and from the looks of it, cost about $1 to make! But, this is what you need to unlock your 1.1.2 iPhone!

Unlocking an OTB 1.1.2 iPhone

The test subject we have here is my friend’s jailbreaked 1.1.2 iPhone that he’s had for a while now (or should I say expensive iPod Touch, LOL!). Anyways…I checked out the video and the document on how to install the StealthSIM. It’s fairly simple. You will need a paperclip and a cutting utensil, preferably a cutting tool. Here’s the StealthSIM side by side with my Fido SIM:

img_2300-small.JPG

Your SIM needs to have the corner cut out to accommodate for the tiny chip that protrudes out of the StealthSIM. Check out my picture-perfect cut here:

img_2301-small.JPG

I’ve read stories on forums about how users had their StealthSIMs lost in their iPhones upon trying to take out their SIM tray. The reason that happened to them was because there was no tape holding down the SteathSIM to the tray. To avoid this, I cut a few tiny pieces of clear tape to secure the SealthSIM–but you have to make sure the tape is thin, as the try does not leave much room for the tape to go down.

So Does the StealthSIM Work?

I had an old Fido Pay As You Go SIM that I tried with this review. I modified the SIM, put the StealthSIM on, taped it down a bit, then had to jimmy it into the iPhone SIM tray. After a momentary pause, I got a message asking if I wanted to have the “StealthSIM” message displayed or not. I chose “yes” and this is what I saw. Eureka! 1.1.2 iPhone unlocked in Canada!!

img_2295-small.JPG

So there you have it. The StealthSIM, courtesy of iPhoneTheSolution was mailed to me within two days via Xpresspost and it works as advertised. If you don’t want to wait any longer, it’s an easy and instant solution to unlock your 1.1.2 iPhone.

Remember, enter the limited time offer coupon code “IPHONECA” for $5US in savings on your StealthSIM order. That coupon makes it the cheapest StealthSIM price on the internet! Click here to buy one now!

StealthSIM & Rogers SIM Card Giveaway/Contest! Finally!

As promised, I am going to give this StealthSIM away to one of my lucky readers! I’m also going to throw in a brand new Rogers SIM card. This will make the perfect bundle for someone looking to buy an iPhone and unlock it. $150US in value, coming your way for free! Here’s how to enter:

One entry – post a comment in this thread (FYI, if this is your first time posting a comment, it will not appear right away, as the first comment is always sent in for moderation. Future comments will appear instantly) and subscribe to my RSS feed!

Two entries – blog about this contest, and write about your chances of winning. I am looking for something like this:

iPhone in Canada is holding a contest to give away a free StealthSIM and Rogers SIM card to unlock your 1.1.2 iPhone!

The contest is open to people in Canada and the rest of the world. The Rogers SIM is only available to winners located in Canada. If the StealthSIM winner is from outside Canada, the Rogers SIM will be given away in a separate contest. This contest will end in one week on midnight of January 22nd. Good luck!!! 🙂

Help a brotha out! 🙂

I have been reading this blog for a couple of weeks now becuase I am keen to pick up an iPhone and start using it here in Canada. I have not bought one yet becuase I figured I would wait until after MacWorld Expo today to see if iPhone 2.0 would be appearing soon or not.

I heard a rumor that we may see an iPhone on the 3G network. I also heard, (maybe from this site), that Steve Jobs may announce the appearance of the iPhone in Canada. Does Telus have 3G? Do you think that maybe they scooped Rogers and will be offering the iPhone this year? I guess we will see later today.

Anyway, regardless of what happens, I will be getting myself an iPhone shortly, probably this week, and could sure use a StealthSim!

Ciao,

Brent

I was hoping to see a 16 GB iPhone. That would have been perfect.

However, a steathSIM would be nice too. 😉

is software solution or sim unlock safer approach ?
lot’s discussed but nothing conclusive when you have the choice, any thoughts?

Depends on what you mean by “safer”…I personally am happy with a software unlock, however, the sim unlock so far has proved to be pretty easy.

Of course, with a software unlock you need to wait, and you risk messing up your phone. With the sim unlock, it’s just plug and play. Both solutions will run into problems when upgrading…it’s a matter of preference! 🙂

Thanks again for this excellent resource! Hoping by days end to have news from Jobs announced at MacWorld that hopefully will make this contest unnecessary (a Cdn. release date). But for now, figured I’d throw my name into the proverbial as well.

Best of luck to you all. And to iPhone Fan, thanks again.

If this is the only way to use a new iPhone in Canada then let’s do it! I’ve had one since October but a friend of mine just bought one and can’t use it yet. stealthSIM might be his only option.

Great pics and explanation of the technology. Thanks

I can’t wait to try this. I go to the states all the time and have had an iPhone in my hands knowing it wouldn’t be possible to use it unless Rogers got it and I was prepared to take it in the wallet. If I can go to the US and pick one up for $400 and unlock it for $100 that’ll save me $400 on what Rogers would charge for me to upgrade my phone to an iphone next Christmas.

Cheers,

Colin.

Wow. That’s a great review. And good idea about the tape too. I already have an iPhone, and unfortunately its 1.1.2otb. Hopefully there will be a software unlock soon, but in the meantime it would be supersweet to get a stealthsim. That way I wouldn’t have to worry at all about whether a software unlock materializes or not.

Hey guys,

Just bought my iPhone with 1.1.2 firmware and found this site while looking for an unlock. Great site.

Too bad Canadians didn’t get any love at the keynote today.

Now that 1.1.3 is out, would you have a chance to test this method with it?

I’m on 1.1.1 but wouldn’t mind buying this if it gets me to 1.1.3 as painless as it seems to be. Thanks.

Hi iphone Fan
I have been following your site….which is great…..ever since my husband announced that he had bought me an iPhone for Christmas (we don’t have them in Ireland yet and may be waiting for a while!) . Unfortunately the iPhone didnt arrive on Christmas Eve as promised by DHL or on any other day as it went missing within the DHL facility, so someone got a nice iPhone for Christmas, but not me! Anyway a replacement is now on its way via UPS this time. But now realise I need a Stealth SIM to activate it and like your friend do not need an expensive iTouch! Let me be test it out in Ireland for you!

Thanks for a) taking the time to test and show us the StealthSIM and b) being generous enough to consider donating it!! With all the hacked and fake posts and reviews popping up this site has been a great and reliable resource.

I picked my phone up in the US 2 months ago.. week 46 (off my 2 weeks!?) and have been waiting patiently since! If I could help hack I would!!

It continues to amaze me that in this great country we are so ass-backwards in technology and innovation!? Why we have to always be following our neighbours I’ll never know – most of my smartest friends are Canadian! 😉

Anyway thanks again, by all means consider me for the contest. I’ll be putting a post up on my “Dummification of ManKind” blog as soon as it’s back up – the bastards at Network Solutions screwed me and stole my domain!?!

Oh… does it help to mention it’s my birthday in 2 days?? 🙂

Happy New Year everyone!

I cut thin strips, a few millimeters wide and taped the bottom of the sim tray and around the sides at the top. You must ensure that your tape is THIN…because the sim tray slot is very narrow.

One piece rubbed off as I was inserting my sim…just be careful…take your time!
