Ottawa-based patent licensing company, WiLan, has won in court versus Apple over a patent infringement dispute. A San Diego, California jury ordered Apple to pay $145 million USD in damages, for infringing on two patents related to wireless communications technology. The decision was made earlier today.

According to WiLan’s update on their trial against Apple:
In a trial verdict rendered on August 1, 2018 in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California a jury awarded WiLAN $145.1 million in damages against Apple Inc. for infringement of WiLAN’s US patent Nos 8,457,145 and 8,537,757.
Reuters reports Apple plans to appeal the verdict, as the company rejected claims of infringement in its pre-trial filings.
As far back as 2013, WiLan has sought litigation against Apple for patent infringement, but that year the iPhone maker won the battle in court from a U.S. jury, as WiLan sought $248 million USD in damages.
