Apple Says Studio Display Front Camera Image Quality to Improve with Software Update
The first media reviews of Apple’s Mac Studio computer and Studio Display monitor were shared on Thursday. When it comes to the camera image quality on the Studio Display, it’s being criticized by many for being downright terrible.
According to John Gruber from Daring Fireball, he had some harsh words about the Studio Display camera and its image quality. Gruber said the camera is “crushingly disappointing. Image quality is astonishingly poor, and Center Stage is glitchy.”
Studio Display has the same 12MP ultra-wide lens used in the latest iPad Air. When comparing images taken on the front camera of the iPad Air versus the Studio Display, the latter fares far worse in handling lighting conditions. “The image from the Studio Display is terrible,” writes Gruber, noting all images in all lighting conditions were “grainy, lacking in contrast, and make skin tones look cadaveric.”

When he shared his concerns with Apple, a spokesperson said they had “identified some issues where the Studio Display is not delivering the image quality they expected, and they will be making improvements in future software updates.”
Gruber says, “I feel like I could have written this paragraph before I even got that call.” He still doesn’t feel confident Apple can drastically fix the front camera image quality on the Studio Display, “into something Apple should be proud of.”

Other concerns were similarly shared by Joanna Stern from the Wall Street Journal. Apple told her the same statement when she said the front camera image quality on the Studio Display was worse than a 14-inch MacBook Pro, 2MP camera on an LG UltraFine 5K and iPhone 11 Pro.
Unfortunately, one of the Studio Display's marquee features, its webcam, suffers from pretty bad performance issues. After I brought it up and sent samples, Apple said it was working on a 'fix' for this.

TechCrunch’s Matthew Panzarino similarly found poor front camera image quality on the Studio Display, which retails for $1,999 CAD.
