Google, Facebook, and More Opting Out of Offering Apps on Apple Silicon Macs

Although Apple’s new Silicon-based Macs will technically be able to run any iOS app, some major developers are opting out of offering their software on the devices.

A new report from 9to5Mac claims that while any iOS app can be downloaded and installed on the Apple Silicon Macs however, some big app developers like Google and Facebook may not offer their apps through the Mac App Store.

Of course, both companies have web versions of their apps — and WhatsApp has a Mac App that will probably run fine on Rosetta 2 emulation. That includes Instagram, whose web browser version has been quietly improving, adding DMs in recent months.

Other non-Google and Facebook-owned iOS apps that won’t be making the jump to Silicon Macs include the likes of Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and, even popular games like Candy Crush and Among Us.

It’s important to remember that Apple’s transition from Intel to ARM-based chips will take two years. In that time, developers will work to get their app running smoothly on the new architecture. With that in mind, some of these early App Store omissions could arrive later when developers have ironed out any bugs and feel good about the user experience they’re delivering.

Rumours suggest that the company will release a MacBook Air and two MacBook Pros, and the Apple Store has gone down ahead of the event. We’re also likely to hear a final release date for macOS 11.0, Big Sur. We’ll know for sure once the event comes to a close.
