New Hack Enables OS X “Continuity” to Work On Older Macs

A new app called the ‘Yosemite Continuity Activation Tool’ can get OS X 10.10 Yosemite’s “Continuity” feature working on Macs not officially supported by Apple. According to CultofMac, the hack can also diagnose what you need to change on your Mac to enable Handoff, Instant hotspot, and AirDrop on your older Mac which does not have Bluetooth 4.0 LE.

Ars continuity

While the Continuity feature depends on Bluetooth 4.0 LE to work, there are many third-party cards which you can plug into your Mac. However, Apple doesn’t recognize or officially support these third-party solutions to enable Continuity. This tool does exactly that, enabling the feature in the following Macs:

  • Any MacBook Air from 2008 onwards
  • Any Mac mini from 2009 onwards
  • Any iMac from 2008 onwards
  • Any MacBook Pro from mid 2009 onwards

The main problem with this tool though is that you need to replace your Mac’s wireless and Bluetooth card to get Continuity to work, since USB Bluetooth dongles won’t work. If you’d still like to give it a go, follow the link below to download the app.

The continuity & Hand Off feature is very confusing. Seems to be hit and miss with MacBooks. I have an early 2011 Macbook pro and the SMS/Calling Feature works perfect. I can’t do Hand Off, Airdrop, and Instant Hotspot tho… so it partially works?

Continuity is a “catch-all” term to describe a variety of features introduced in Yosemite. They include SMS Forwarding, Calls on your mac, Handoff, Airdrop, Instant Hotspot.

The first 2 apparently only require WiFi. The others require WiFi and Bluetooth BT LE (found on newer macs only).

When you get handoff working on your mac devices, VisuLauncher is good handoff companion app for your iPhone to scan websites, email addresses, phone numbers, map addresses and launch an appropriate app on your phone. You can then continue “on the big screen” on your Mac.
