Netflix Provides Update on Paid Password Sharing, Launching in Five New Countries

Netflix has provided an update on its paid password sharing option. To counteract the amount of Netflix accounts that are being shared across various households, Netflix is introducing a paid option in five new countries.

Earlier this year, Netflix introduced the “add extra member” feature in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru. Thought of as a password tax of sorts, users could pay a small fee to share their accounts with another household. In a blog post, Netflix announced that the company is now introducing a “add a home” option, launching in Argentina, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.

Starting in August, all users in the aforementioned countries will be notified to “add a home” if they intend to continue sharing their passwords. The paid password sharing option does have stipulations. Each Netflix account will include one home where you can enjoy Netflix on any of your devices, regardless of plan. All users must buy additional homes to share passwords. To use your Netflix account in additional homes, users must pay:

  • 219 Pesos per month per home in Argentina
  • $2.99 per month per home in the Dominican Republic
  • $2.99 per month per home in Honduras
  • $2.99 per month per home in El Salvador
  • $2.99 per month per home in Guatemala

Subscribers on the Basic plan can add one extra home. Standard subscribers can add up to two extra. Finally, Premium subscribers are eligible for up to three extra homes.

The ability to watch content outside the home via a tablet, laptop, or smartphone while travelling is included.

Netflix also confirms that users will soon be able to control where their account is being used and remove homes at any time.  Once enabled, this feature will be available from the account settings page.

Netflix states that subscribers in Argentina, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras will be notified via email prior to the changes.

As of now, there is no word on if or when this option or feature will make its way to Canada. Earlier this year, Netflix reported a 200,000 subscriber loss in Q1 2022. The company is expected to release its Q2 2022 on Tuesday, July 19th.
