Pioneer Canada: Apple’s CarPlay Coming This Summer via Firmware Update

While we saw Pioneer announce its CarPlay aftermarket dash yesterday for U.S. customers, today Pioneer Electronics of Canada has officially announced availability for Canadians.

Pioneer Canada says we will see CarPlay arrive here in the summer of 2014 via a firmware update to their existing five NEX in-dash multimedia receivers.

“Pioneer’s years of expertise integrating smartphone connectivity into the automotive environment has provided us the opportunity to be among the first to offer CarPlay to drivers,” said Andrew Murphy, director of marketing for Pioneer Electronics of Canada, Inc. “By providing an aftermarket option, Pioneer’s 2014 in-dash multimedia systems give many iPhone owners the ability to add CarPlay to their current vehicles.”

In terms of Canadian pricing and availability, the Network Entertainment Experience (NEX) models are listed below; these units were first announced earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas and debuted last month:

  • AVIC-8000NEX ($1500 SRP
  • AVIC-7000NEX ($1300 SRP)
  • AVIC-6000NEX ($1000 SRP)
  • AVIC-5000NEX ($900 SRP)
  • AVH-4000NEX ($750 SRP)

CarPlay is compatible with the iPhone 5, iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. Apple has already updated its CarPlay page to indicate third party aftermarket systems from Alpine and Pioneer will support the feature:
