Last month at a media event in San Francisco, Sonos announced it would launch AirPlay 2 support for select speakers in July.
Well, that day has arrived as the Sonos Controller iOS app has been updated to version 9.0, to bring this latest AirPlay 2 update to the new Sonos Beam, Sonos One, Playbase and Play:5 (2nd generation).

The update also brings a software update for Sonos Beam and adds Trueplay support for the iPad 6th generation.
What does AirPlay 2 support mean? You can now use your compatible Sonos speaker as a destination source for audio right from your iPhone or iPad. AirPlay 2 also means multi-room support for your speakers.

It also means you can ask Siri to play music to an AirPlay 2 speaker, by saying something like “Hey Siri, play some jazz in the office,” and it’ll just happen.
