With the COVID-19 pandemic, Tangerine is making it easier to sign up for a bank account without talking to an agent or leaving your home.

Users of the Tangerine Mobile app on iOS and Android can now sign up for an account by uploading a scan of their photo ID and confirming it by taking a selfie, right from your smartphone. Tangerine touts this is “a first for any bank in Canada.

“This innovation has been in development for months, and I couldn’t be more proud of our team – working around the clock to bring this new fully digital mobile onboarding experience to Canadians ahead of schedule,” said Gillian Riley, President  and CEO, Tangerine Bank, in a statement.

Users just need to scan a valid Canadian driver’s license, take a selfie, complete some further information and also add a digital signature. Tangerine says they “won’t store any of these images—we only use them to verify your identity.”
